Suzanne Vega was born in California in 1959 but her family moved to New York when she was only two years old. Suzanne Vega began writing at the age of 9, and had her first song penned by the age of 14. While attending the New York High School of the Performing Arts, Suzanne Vega studied modern dance; while she was attending Columbia University's Barnard College for English literature, Suzanne Vega would sometimes perform at small venues in Greenwich Village.
She was signed to a major record label in 1984 and released her self-titled debut album in 1985. Her next release, 1987's Solitude Standing garnered two hits in "Tom's Diner" and "Luka." Days of Open hand, released in 1990, saw a musical style that was more experimental, and lyrics with greater emotion.
Suzanne Vega released a few more albums, one in 1992, another in 1996, and in 1999 and 2001 before releasing Retrospective: The Best of Suzanne Vega in 2003. The single "Caramel" was featured in the movie The Truth About Cats and Dogs and was later in the movie Closer.
Suzanne Vega plans to record a new album scheduled for release in 2007.
