Sugarland began as a trio with lead singer Jennifer Nettles, songwriter Kristen Hall, and folk/rock hero Kristian Bush. Kristen Hall announced in January 2006 that she was leaving Sugarland, but Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush carried on as Sugarland.
All three members of Sugarland had extensive solo experience before they teamed up. Sugarland formed rather quickly and were unsigned when the made their first concert appearance four months after getting together. Two weeks later, Sugarland was signed by Mercury Records. Kristen Hall called Kristian Bush, who was a member of Billy Pilgrim at the time, and the two began writing together. Sooner or later, they came to realize they needed a singer. Jennifer Nettles was also looking for something new, and she quickly signed on to join the other two.
From the start, the members of Sugarland decided that they were going to set their hopes and goals for themselves high. Their debut album, Twice the Speed of Life was released in October 2004 and went multi-platinum. After years in the music industry the members of Sugarland became an instant success.
