Snow Patrol formed in Scotland in 1994. Originally called Shrug, the band began performing at Dundee University and the surrounding area. Then they changed their name to Polarbear. Their music was influenced by Pearl Jam, and then by Sebadoh.
Starfighter Pilot was their three-track EP released in mid-1997; current band members at the time included Belle & Sebastian drummer Richard Colburn and Stuart Murdoch shared in vocals. When an American band by the same name threatened to sue, Polarbear changed their name to Snow Patrol.
Johnny Quinn joined as a regular drummer, and the lineup was complete with vocalist/guitarist Gary Lightbody and bassist/keyboardist Mark McClelland. Snow Patrol released another EP, Little Hide, and Songs for Polarbears was their official debut release in August 1998.
In 2001, Snow Patrol released When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up. Nathan Connolly joined the band and Snow Patrol signed with Polydor. Snow Patrol released Final Straw in 2003, and Final Straw hit the United States in 2004.
Mark McClelland left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Terra Diablo. Snow Patrol spent the summer of 2005 as an opening act for U2 and played at Live 8 in London. Eyes Open was released in 2006, and Snow Patrol continues to tour in support of their music.
