As a solo artist and a member of the group The Miracles Smokey Robinson recorded seventy Top 40 hits on the Motown label from 1959-1990. He went on to become the label's vice president for more than 25 years. Smokey Robinson worked closely with Motown founder Berry Gordy, building the label into a success. They scored their first hit single in 1960 with "Shop Around". Smokey Robinson wrote hits for his own group and for many other Motown artists. Over the course of his almost 50-year career in music, Robinson has over 4,000 songs to his credit.

Smokey Robinson went solo in the early ‘70s. He overcame an addiction to cocaine and went on to record more hits in the 1980s including "Just to See Her." He took an eight-year hiatus from Motown and then returned to help run the company. More recently he has recorded an album of pop standards and a gospel album. He also launched a soul food line in 2004. In 2006 he was awarded a degree of Doctor of Music by Howard University.
