Original Smash Mouth drummer Kevin Coleman borrowed the name from former Chicago Bears' former coach Mike Ditka, a term that described viscious football playing. The San Jose band is made up of Steven Harwell (lead vocalist), Greg Camp (guitarist/songwriter), and Paul De Lisle (bassist). After three drummers in the past, their newest drummer is Jason Sutter.
Smash Mouth's big break came from a San Jose radio station. Their first album Fush Yu Mang went double platinum. "Walkin' on the Sun" was Smash Mouth's first major single, released in 1997. Their second album Astro Lounge got critical acclaim and changed Smash Mouth's fan base. Their single "All Star" became popular in mid-1999, and it was featured on the soundtracks for the movies Mystery Men and later Shrek and Rat Race. Smash Mouth also drew attention for some of their 1960s remakes. Unofficial members of Smashmouth are Michael Klooster on keyboards and Mark Cerventes on percussion.
Evolving from a ska/punk sound, Smash Mouth experienced some confusion over their style as it changed more toward pop. In addition their sales suffered from the release of the movie soundtracks before their individual albums. They are currently working on their seventh studio album scheduled for a 2006 release.
