Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 27, 1977 in Barranquilla, Columbia. Her mother is Catalan and Italian, and her father is American-born Lebanese. When Shakira was only eight years old, she began writing her own music. At the age of 10, Shakira tried out for her school choir but was rejected because her voice was "too strong." Her first real taste of singing was on Vivan Los Ninos, a weekly TV singing competition for children.
Between the ages of 10 through 13, Shakira became somewhat of a celebrity in Barranquilla, thanks to her involvement in various events around town. It was around this time that she met local theater producer Monica Ariza. Ariza heard her talent, and happened to be sitting next to Sony Columbia executive Ciro Vargas while the two were in a flight from Barranquilla to Bogota. Vargas agreed to let Shakira audition; Shakira was then signed to a three-year contract with Sony Columbia.
Shakira released Magia (Magic) in 1991, when she was only 13. Two years later, Shakira released Peligro (Danger), before deciding to finish high school. The 1995 release Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) established commercial success for Shakira. Some of the songs off of that release were remixed and later recorded in Portuguese.
Donde Estan los Landrones? (Where are the thieves?) was released in 1998, and sold over 1 million copies in the U.S., and close to 4 million worldwide. March 2000 saw Shakira on brief tours in the U.S., Panama, and Argentina. Following the success of Donde Estan los Landrones?, Shakira began working on an English-language release. Laundry Service was released in 2001. Hit singles such as "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes" exposed Shakira to an even wider audience.
Shakira received five MTV Video Music Awards Latin America for Best Female Artist, Best Pop Artist, Best Artist North (Region), Video of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Shakira released Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 (Oral Fixation) in 2005. The first single, "La Tortura" (The Torture) hit No. 23 on the Billboard charts, the highest ranking ever for a Spanish song in the United States. "La Tortura" spent 25 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, making it the most successful Latin single ever.
Shakira won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock Album in 2006 and went on her first world tour since 2002-03's "Tour of the Mongoose." Although Shakira has been engaged to Antonio de la Rua, son of the former Argentinean president Fernando de la Rua since 2001, they are yet to be married.
