Samuel Roy Hagar was born in Monterey, California on October 13, 1947. He got his start in music with the band the Fabulous Castiles. Later, when he worked with the group Montrose, Sammy Hagar produced "Bad Motor Scooter" before leaving the band with bassist Bill Church and drummer Denny Carmassi.

Sammy Hagar began work as a solo artist. He released a few albums through Capital Records, and then made some personnel changes. Longtime friend David Lauser was brought in to be a Sammy Hagar's drummer, and they signed on to Geffen Records.

Sammy Hagar then saw hits in "Heavy Metal," "Three Lock Box," and "I Can't Drive 55." In 1983, Sammy Hagar, Neal Schon, Kenny Aaronson and Michael Schrieve formed HSAS (Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve). HSAS was a small sort-lived project, only touring for a brief stint.

When David Lee Roth left Van Halen they were looking for a new vocalist. Sammy Hagar was invited to try out, and the rest is history. With Sammy Hagar as the front man, Van Halen saw success with 5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance. All of these releases went multi-platinum, and even spawned a number of No. 1 hits.

Van Halen took some time off after their 1995 world tour, and things began to fall apart. Eddie Van Halen decided to rejoin with David Lee Roth, and the band subsequently broke up. Sammy Hagar officially parted ways with Van Halen and went on to record several solo records around 1996. Sammy Hagar then joined with drummer David Lauser, keyboardist Jesee Harms, and guitarist Vic Johnson and bassist Tommy Tutone to form the Waboritas.

Following the co-headline with David Lee Roth in the 2002 "Heavyweights of Rock" tour, Sammy Hagar got back in touch with Alex Van Halen in 2003, and Van Halen and Sammy Hagar reunited for a 2004 summer tour and a 2-CD Best Of album (Best of Both Worlds). Sammy Hagar continued to play with the Waboritas, and in 2006 Sammy Hagar planned to release a solo studio album while touring with the Waboritas.
