Ann Rabson, Gaye Adegbalola, and Earlene Lewis came together to form the acoustic blues trio Saffire the Uppity Blues Women in the Washington, D.C. area in 1987. Lewis was replaced by Andra Faye in 1992. Their music is both serious blues songs and comedic novelty songs. Saffire the Uppity Blues Women music is said to be inspired by blues women of the past including Mama Thornton, Ida Cox, and Koko Taylor.

Saffire the Uppity Blues Women was the first acoustic band to be signed by Alligator Records, with whom they released their debut album, Uppity Blues Women, in 1990. That was followed by Hot Flash in 1991, Old, New, Borrowed & Blue in 1994, Cleaning House in 1996, Live & Uppity in 1998, and Ain't Gonna Hush in 2001. Their most recent release was 2006's greatest hits album Deluxe Edition.
