The Russian National Ballet Theatre began in the late '80s during the transitional period of Perestroika. During this time, many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union's ballet institutions were beginning to start new companies. The Soviet National Ballet, as it was called back then, managed to stay dedicated to the tradition of classical Russian Ballet while bringing in developments from around the world.

The Russian Ballet features chorography from St. Petersburg and Perm, two of the great Russian choreography schools. Over 50 dancers perform as part of the Russian National Ballet. The Russian Ballet first toured Europe in the 1997-98 season before expanding their tour to North America in the spring of 1999. The Russian National Ballet has performed various works including Don Quixote, La Bayadere, and Swan Lake.
