Roseanne Cash was born in Memphis in 1955, a month before her father Johnny released his first single. Growing up in the wake of her father's struggles with drugs and alcohol, Roseanne Cash was not initially drawn to life in the public eye. She worked for three years in her father's road show and recorded her punk-influenced debut album in 1978. She married her producer Rodney Crowell in 1979 and the stormy relationship lasted until 1992.
Roseanne Cash found her strongest following in the country market but her music draws from folk, pop, rock and blues traditions. She writes her own songs and records covers of a number of artists, including her father. The Roseanne Cash song "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me," was written in frustration after not winning a Grammy Award. Ironically, this song did win her a Grammy in 1985. She recorded her 2003 song "September When it Comes" as a duet with her father, garnering much acclaim for the song and its video.
Cash has had more than 20 Top 40 country singles, 11 of them hitting Top 10. She also wrote a book of short stories in 1996. Releasing her twelfth album in 2006, Black Cadillac honors the losses of her stepmother, her parents, and her step sister who all passed away during a two-year span.
Now married to producer John Leventhal, he is the father of her children.
