Roger Waters, born George Roger Waters in 1943, grew up with just his mother after he lost his father during World War II. A strong distrust of the governmental, educational, and military institutions is apparent in Roger Waters' writing. While attending the Regent Street Polytechnic school of architecture, he met Nick Mason and Richard Wright. He would later meet David Gilmour and Syd Barrett. Together, the five of them formed Pink Floyd in 1965.

Pink Floyd debuted in 1967 with Piper at the Gates of Dawn; one year later, Barrett would end up leaving the band. Roger Waters began taking on more responsibility through song writing, vocals, and guitar playing. When David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd, it was Roger Waters' writing that helped Pink Floyd produce a series of critically acclaimed albums that were some of the best selling albums of all time. Roger Waters was also responsible for the idea of the Pink Floyd concept albums. To his credit, over 70 percent of Pink Floyd songs were written by Roger Waters.

By 1985, Roger Waters claimed that Pink Floyd disbanded due to irreconcilable differences. Roger Waters and Gilmour frequently found themselves at battle with each other over the rights to use the name Pink Floyd. In the end, Gilmour won the right to most of the band's songs: Roger Waters kept the rights to The Wall (minus the three songs penned by Gilmour) and the rights of the famous Pink Floyd pigs.

In 1984 Roger Waters released his first solo effort, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking. The 1987 release and tour of Radio K.A.O.S. was met with competition from a reformed Pink Floyd. When the Berlin Wall collapsed in 1989, Roger Waters held a charity concert featuring The Wall in Berlin. Amused to Death, released in 1992, is quite possibly Roger Waters most critically acclaimed release.

Seven years later, Roger Waters embarked on the In the Flesh tour, which highlighted his songs from his Pink Floyd days as well as his solo works. In 2002, Roger Waters made appearances at the Countryside Alliance and the Glastonbury Festival. Two years following, Roger Waters' singles "To Kill The Child" and "Leaving Beirut" were leaked onto the Internet. Roger Walters reunited with Pink Floyd for a four-song, 23-minute set at Live 8 in London.

Roger Waters released his 16-years-in-the-making opera, Ca Ira, in 2005. There is rumor that another solo album is going to be released in 2006. Roger Waters is currently on tour in Europe, with a tour in the United States to follow.
