Rockapella formed in 1986. Elliot Kerman and Sean Altman had recently graduated from Brown University; they teamed up with Steve Keys and David Stix for performances at Manhattan schools and on the streets. Stix only lasted a year before he was replaced by Charlie Everett. Eventually, the foursome was hired to perform in front of audiences and was actually paid for their work.
Their first television appearance came in 1988 on the Regis Philbin Show. Everett would quit the band in 1989 to focus on his software career; Barry Carl was then added to the band. They were soon hired to write and perform the theme song for Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. Keys would then leave the band, and Scott Leonard became the newest Rockapella member.
Jeff Thatcher joined the band in 1993, and now Rockapella was five members strong. Carmen Sandiego came to an end after 295 episodes. Altman left the band and Kevin Wright signed on to join the band; Carl retired in 2001 and George Baldi joined the band; Kerman quit in 2004 and was replaced by John J. Brown
Even with all the lineup changes (not a single starting member is still with the band), Rockapella has managed to release a number of albums. Their debut was Primer in 1995, which was followed by Lucky Seven in 1996. Rockapella was released in 1997 and was followed by Don't Tell Me You Do two years later. 1999. 2 and Christmas were both released in 2000; In Concert was released in 2001. Smilin' and Comfort & Joy were released in 2002. Rockapella's most recent release was 2002's Live In Japan.
Rockapella takes the songs of other artists and performs them by using only their voices.
