Robert Earl Keen was born on January 11, 1956 in Houston, Texas. While he was growing up, Robert Earl Keen was interested in sports, music, movies, and writing. He also attended Texas A&M University for journalism, where he began playing guitar and taught himself to read and write music.
His sound was based on folk, country, blues, and roots rock, and in 1977 he coincidentally moved into a place next to Lyle Lovett. Soon enough, the two became friends and spent time playing together on the front porch, which was inspiration for "The Front Porch Song."
After he graduated from Texas A&M in 1980, Robert Earl Keen spent his days writing for the newspaper and his nights performing in front of audiences at nightclubs and live music venues in Austin.
In 1984 he financed his own EP and distributed it regionally. Two years later, he moved to Nashville, but was back in Austin a short time later. In 1989 he released his debut album West Textures.
His 1993 release, A Biggest Piece of Sky was well reviewed by both critics and audiences. Over the next dozen years, Robert Earl Keen would go on to release eight more albums. He continues to write, record, and perform on tour and is popular with country music fans, folk music fans, the college radio crowd, and alt-country fans alike.
