Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey in Liverpool on July 7, 1940. As a youngster, his stepfather purchased a drum set for him, and at the age of 16, Richie began playing in bands. In 1959 he joined the group that came to be known as Rory Storm & the Hurricanes. The bandleader renamed him Ringo Starr, and at one point, the group was so popular that they headlined gigs above the up-and-coming Beatles. Ringo got to know the Beatles during their Hamburg days, and became friends with the band members. In August 1962, Paul, George and John offered him 25 British pounds a week if he'd join the band. Since the offer was five pounds more than another group was offering, Ringo joined the Beatles. Starr easily fit in with the group, and, at one point in the band's career, the "I Love Ringo" buttons outsold any other Beatles buttons. Starr's drumming made a distinctive mark on the Beatles' sound, and he even had his own vocal numbers on Beatles albums, including "Boys," "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Yellow Submarine," "A Little Help From My Friends," and Octopus's Garden." When the group broke up, he began a solo career that has included the hit songs, "Photograph," "It Don't Come Easy," "Oh My My," and "You're Sixteen." In 1992 Ringo concluded a nine-year hiatus from the recording studio and released his 11th solo album, "Time Takes Time." Since 1989 he has toured with his All-Starr Band, which has featured a changing roster of noteworthy musicians and, in many cases, longtime friends. His most recent world tour was in the summer of 1995, and the band members included Ringo's son, Zak Starkey, on drums, as well as Billy Preston, Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), Felix Cavaliere (Young Rascals), John Entwistle (Who) and Mark Rivera. While Ringo was with the Beatles, his performances in their films were well-received, and he has gone on to appear in many other movies, among them, "The Last Waltz," "The Kids Are Alright," "Magic Christian" and "Caveman," in which he co-starred with Barbara Bach, his wife since 1975. He also appeared in numerous television programs, such as his own special, "Ringo," and, with Barbara, in the mini-series, "Princess Daisy." Ringo has three children from a previous marriage, Zak, Jason and Lee.
