Country and bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs was born July 18, 1954 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Ricky Skaggs plays the mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and several wind instruments. In 1970, Ricky Skaggs joined Ralph Stanley's bluegrass band the Clinch Mountain Boys. In addition to his stint with the Clinch Mountain Boys, Ricky Skaggs also spent time with Emmylou Harris' Hot Band and wrote the arrangements for her highly praised Roses in the Snow album. Ricky Skaggs also sang harmony and played some instruments on the album.

Ricky Skaggs released his debut album in 1980 called Waitin' For The Sun To Shine. Four singles hit the charts, including consecutive back-to-back hits. Many feel as though Ricky Skaggs then went on to single handedly save country music. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1982 and was the youngest member (at the time) to be included. Ricky Skaggs also saw 18 Top 10 hits, including 12 that hit No 1. Throughout his career, he also picked up dozens of awards, including Grammy Awards and Country Music Association Awards.

In 2000, Rickey Skaggs was lucky enough to share the stage with the rock band Phish. Ricky Skaggs is also credited as the founder of Neotraditional Country, and fans have been drawn to his dedication to the traditional bluegrass sound. While he tries to combine his old music and at the same time be a pioneer for new music, Ricky Skaggs performs to the delight of fans all over the country. His most recent album was Hunting Dog Blues (with Ole Smacker) in 2005.
