Rasputina Information

Cellists playing alternative rock? Rasputina strikes a different chord than most rock bands but its unmistakable music offers a fresh approach to rock. In Brooklyn, New York in 1992, Melora Creager put out an advertisement requesting members to form an all-cello band. Julia Kent responded, and the two formed what was originally dubbed the Travelling Ladies' Cello Society. Melora Creager writes all of the lyrics for Rasputina, performs all of the vocals, and does much of the cover art for the albums. Because their music was difficult to categorize it took them years before gaining a recording contract in 1996.

By their second album Rasputina began adding other members for short periods of time beginning with Chris Vrenna from Nine Inch Nails. Other members have included Lisa Haney, Carpella Parvo, Agnieszka Rybska, Perry James, and Zoë Keating. Kent has left the band and as of 2006. Rasputina consists of Melora Creager and Jonathon TeBeest.

Appearing in Victorian costume at concerts and in photographs, Rasputina is still difficult to categorize after several albums. Their lyrics make many historical references and their sound is dark and ethereal.
