Rascal Flatts

Traditional country fans are giving Rascal Flatts a second look. The Rascal Flatts sound may be slick and more pop-like, but the harmonies of this trio are winning over fans in both the country and pop markets. They are often compared to the group Alabama a long-standing country staple. Before their fourth album, Me and My Gang, was released in April 2006, Rascal Flatts had already accrued 14 hits on the country charts, four of which rose to No. 1. And within their first six years as a group Rascal Flatts hit the US Hot 100 a total of 12 times. Not bad for three albums. The third Rascal Flatts album Feels Like Today debuted at #1 on both the pop and country albums charts.

Rascal Flatts is made up of Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney. As second cousins Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus grew up making music together during their family jam sessions in Columbus, Ohio. Jay DeMarcus took to Nashville in 1992 using his voice and instrumental skills (he plays guitar, bass, keyboards, mandolin, and others) to earn his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. In 1997 he convinced Gary LeVox to leave his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and join him playing gigs in the Nashville area. When Jay DeMarcus got a job in Chely Wright's band he met guitarist Joe Don Rooney. Joe Donn Rooney got his musical influences from his brothers and sisters, whose tastes crossed several musical styles. The cousins invited Joe Don Rooney to play in a Nashville bar with them when their guitarist couldn't make it to a weekend show. The three-man combo was magic and they decided to record some demos together as Rascal Flatts.

By 2000, Rascal Flatts had released a self-titled album producing three Top 10 hits: "Prayin' for Daylight," "This Everyday Love," and "While You Loved Me." After their first album Rascal Flatts opened for Alan Jackson, Jo Dee Messina, Toby Keith, and later for Brooks & Dunn. "These Days," the first single from their 2002 album Melt, hit No. 1. Rascal Flatts also won the CMA Horizon Award in 2002. Rascal Flatts was named the 2003 and 2004 CMA Vocal Group of the Year and the 2003, 2004, and 2005 ACM Vocal Group of the Year as well as the 2004 CMA Vocal Group of the Year. "Bless the Broken Road" won Rascal Flatts their first Grammy for Best Country Song.

In 2003, Rascal Flatts stirred controversy due to brief scenes of nudity in their music video for "I Melt." However, the Feels Like Todayhidden track "Skin (Sarabeth)," about a teenager battling cancer, brought Rascal Flatts acclaim and received a high amount of airplay, often by request.

Rascal Flatts released their self-titled debut album in 2000, Melt in 2002, and Feels Like Today in 2004. Rascal Flatts kicked off their "Me & My Gang Tour" Feb. 2, 2006, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Me and My Gang 2006 tour will launch with opening acts Blake Shelton, on all dates, as well as Keith Anderson and Jason Aldean on some dates through March. Rascal Flatts closed out 2005 with the No. 2 country tour (Here's To You) after 750,000 fans attended the 70-city concert run. Rascal Flatts has headlined three sell-out tours, played the Grand Ole Opry, performed for the President and First Lady, and appeared on the soundtrack of We Were Soldiers and The Emperor's New Groove.
