In 1991 Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, former members of Operation Ivy, formed Rancid. The San Francisco-based punk-pop band added drummer Bret Reed next. A five song EP in 1992 led to a contract with Epitaph, giving the band tremendous creative control. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1993. Guitarist Lars Frederikson joined the band for their follow up album. 1994's Let's Go made waves in the punk scene and the video "Salvation" was heavily played on MTV. The album went gold and other labels came courting but Rancid stayed put, choosing to maintain the creative control they had enjoyed.

Heavily influenced by The Clash the next Rancid album And Out Comes the Wolves was extremely successful achieving some crossover success. Rancid's music is a mixture of traditional punk with some traditional rock, ska, and reggae influence. Its fast beats and lyrics easily get a crowd fired up. A stripped down second self-titled album came in 2000, pleasing many longtime fans but alienating others. Their most recent release is 2003's Indestructible. Rancid took a hiatus following its release. Rancid regrouped in 2006 to start a summer tour and alluded to a 2007 release.
