The British quintet Radiohead is commonly regarded as one of the most fearless bands in recent history. Thom Yorke, Johnny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, and Phil Selway first got together in the in mid-‘80s at Abingdon School just outside of Oxford. While at the time the five of them did not know each other well, they began meeting in the school's music department. Early on, their career was influenced by the likes of such performers as R.E.M., the Smiths, and Elvis Costello. At first, Radiohead decided to call themselves On A Friday, in honor of the day they got together to practice. On A Friday's first show was at Jericho Tavern in Oxford in August 1986.

When the members of On A Friday went to college, they put their plans for a band on hold. It was almost four years before the men would reconvene and play together again. In the early-to-mid-‘90s, the band saw themselves booked at various places and trying to break into the British music press. The change of their name to Radiohead was taken from a single off of the Talking Heads' True Stories. Radiohead first gained fame in 1992 with the single "Creep" off of the 1993 release of Pablo Honey. The success of the tour following the release of Pablo Honey kept Radiohead on the road for two years. In 1995, Radiohead released The Bends, which has since been considered by some critics as one of the best albums of the ‘90s.

Radiohead followed up that release with OK Computer in 1997. OK Computer received even greater critical acclaim than The Bends. OK Computer won Radiohead a Grammy award for Best Alternative Album. Following the release of that album, Radiohead embarked on their "Against Demons World Tour" in 1998, and contemplated breaking up once the tour was over. The fourth album by Radiohead, Kid A, was released more than three years after OK Computer. Kid A received a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album, but was greeted by critics as too self-indulgent and rather radio-unfriendly. The 2001 follow up, Amnesiac, prompted Radiohead to begin another tour. Radiohead released I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings in the fall of 2001.

Two years later, Radiohead released Hail to the Thief. Hail to the Thief might not have been the same genre-defining release as other Radiohead releases. It was right on par with the popular music of that time. Radiohead performed at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2004 and spent the rest of that year with each member off doing solo projects or raising families. In 2005, Radiohead members performed at various festivals. There is speculation of a possible tour in 2006 along with other festivals. A new release is reportedly in the works.
