A lead singer reluctant to sing heavy metal and the fall of the '80s hair bands don't typically add up to success. But Queensryche is still releasing new albums in 2006. Originally called the Mob, Queensryche started out as a heavy metal cover band in Seattle.
Their members include Geoff Tate, Michael Wilton, Mike Stone, Eddie Jackson, and Scott Rockenfield. Chris DeGarmo played guitar for the band through 1997 and has provided input on albums since then, but he no longer tours with the band. Kelly Gray filled his position for three years. Tate offered the band a distinctive vocal edge. Having studied opera, he had turned to hard rock because of the lyrical freedom it offered.
Queensryche's heavy metal sound earned a loyal fan base during the years. Many of their lyrics tackled social themes. An early '90s departure toward grunge was not well received and the band moved back toward metal. Their most recent album is a 2006 sequel to their popular 1988 theme album Operation: Mindcrime.
