Primus formed in California in the mid-'80s. Les Claypool has been the only constant member of the band; former members include two guitar players and several drummers. Primus would break up in 2000 but would get back together just two short years later.

Their studio album debut, Frizzle Fry, came in 1990; their major label debut, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, was out one year later. Sailing the Seas of Cheese would go gold as the band was featured in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Two releases later Pork Soda was recorded at Claypool's house; it would debut at No. 7 on the charts. Primus would also appear at Lollapalooza in 1993; the next year, they would be guests at Woodstock '94.

The 1995 release by Primus, Tales from the Punchbowl, featured the Grammy-nominated single "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver." Primus would release a number of other albums until they broke up in 2000. Beginning in 2002, Primus began to regroup and release the DVD Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People. Two years later, Primus performed at Lollapalooza and Vegoose.

Primus released They Can't All Be Zingers: The Best of Primus in 2006. That release came seven years after Antipop.
