Poison began in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and soon moved to Los Angeles, California. Much of Poison's sound and images are closely associated with those of KISS, Cheap Trick, and Aerosmith, among others; Poison celebrates music in the form of glam metal.
In 1984 Poison was known as Paris and consisted of singer Bret Michaels, bassist Bobby Dall, guitarist Matt Smith, and drummer Rikki Rockett. One year later the band moved to Los Angeles and their musical journey began by playing in clubs. When Matt Smith decided to return to Pennsylvania, Poison held try-outs for a new band member. C.C. DeVille was chosen as the winner, and Poison continued to make a name for themselves by way of their theatrical live shows. Although they had next to no money for special effects, Poison still found a way to make things work.
Poison was signed by Enigma Records in 1986 and released Look What the Cat Dragged In later that year. The album went on to sell two million copies. The follow up to Look What the Cat Dragged In, Open UP And Say … Ahh!, went on to sell over eight million copies. Their subsequent tour with David Lee Roth and role as headliner put Poison on pace with Metallica as one of the largest-grossing acts of the late ‘80s. Flesh&Blood was released in 1990 and also went multi-platinum, including three gold singles; "Unskinny Bop," "Ride the Wind," and the ballad "Something To Believe In." Flesh& Bone reached No. 2 on the charts, and a World Tour followed soon after.
C.C. DeVille was fired and replaced by Richie Kotzen prior to the release of Poison's fifth album. Native Tongue was released in August 1993 and sold one million copies worldwide. Poison released a Greatest Hits album in 1996 that went platinum. The summer of 1999 saw Poison on a Greatest Hits reunion tour including C.C. DeVille. In 2000, Poison released Power to the People and Crack a Smile. A few releases later, and Poison was ready to celebrate their 20th anniversary in rock with The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock and a tour by the same name.
