Phil Lesh Information

Starting as a trumpet player, Phil Lesh met Jerry Garcia in college. Garcia talked Phil Lesh into becoming a bass guitarist for a new group he was forming. Phil Lesh learned to play the bass guitar on the job and the group went on to become the much heralded jam band The Grateful Dead. Phil Lesh became an innovator in the new role that the electric bass developed during the mid-1960s. He brought his interest in free jazz and avante-gard classical music to the band, helping the Grateful Dead stretch its limits.

Phil Lesh continued to play with The Grateful Dead for 30 years and later went on to play with its offshoots. He also formed his own band and often tours with other rock veterans in his Phil Lesh and Friends concerts. He is an organ transplant recipient and an advocate for organ donation. He published a book, Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead in 2005. Phil Lesh tours and spends his free time running his charitable foundation with his wife.
