Phil Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in Chiswick, London, England. Phil began as a child actor. His mother was a teacher at the school he attended. Before he began school, his uncle built him a drum kit that could be carried away in a suit case. This would play a major role in Phil's life. When Phil was a teenager, he would go to see the band Yes perform every week at the Marquee. He even wanted to audition to replace the current drummer who was leaving to attend school. He did not audition for Yes, but he noticed an ad in the paper for another band who were looking for a drummer. Phil made arrangements to audition for Genesis. He was in. Phil spent over twenty-five years with Genesis. First as the drummer from 1970-1975, but then stepped up to the microphone in 1975 when front man Peter Gabriel left for personal reasons. Phil also started a solo career as a musician in 1980 with Face Value. That album sold more copies then all Genesis albums combined. Phil released more solo albums, toured, and continued to record and tour with Genesis. But it all ended in 1996 when Phil publicly announced his departure from Genesis. Since then, he has been performing solo. Phil has also performed in movies. He played Buster Edwards in the 1988 movie, Buster. He played Inspector Good in the 1991 movie, Hook. He also appeared in the movies: Frauds (1993), Calliope (1993), And the Band Played On (1993.) He was the voice of Muk and Luk in the cartoon, Balto (1995.) He played Uncle Ernie in The Who Live-Featuring the Rock Opera Tommy. He also made a guest appearance in the TV show Miami Vice (1984) as Phil Mayhew in the episode, "Phil the Shill." In 1996, after more than 20 years with Genesis, Phil officially announced his decision to leave. It was time to move on and focus on his solo career. He was working on the soundtrack for the Disney movie, Tarzan. He recently recorded a Big Band album-something he wanted to do for quite a while. I'm sure he has many projects planned in the years to come, which all Phil Collins fans are anxiously looking forward to.
