Peter Yarrow, Noel "Paul" Stookey, and Mary Travers make up Peter, Paul and Mary. One of the most successful folk singing groups of the '60s, Peter, Paul and Mary launched their career in 1961 with the help of manager Albert Grossman.
Peter, Paul and Mary was recorded in 1962 and featured four singles. The album was also listed on Billboard Magazine Top Ten list for 10 months; it was also in the Top 100 for over three years.
When 1963 rolled around, Peter, Paul and Mary had released two more albums. "Puff the Magic Dragon" hit the charts. Their biggest hit would be their cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," which eventually hit No. 1 on the international charts. The hit song "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" was written by the then-unknown John Denver.
Several releases later, and the trio broke up in 1970 to pursue other interests. While none of them managed to find success as solo artists that was anything close to that as when they were a trio. Noel Stookey did write "The Wedding Song (There is Love)" for Peter Yarrow's marriage to Marybeth McCartney; the song is a popular choice at weddings since it was released in 1971.
Peter, Paul and Mary regrouped in 1978 for a nuclear energy protest, and went on to record additional albums and tour together. They play about 25 shows year. Even when Mary Travers was diagnosed with leukemia, Peter, Paul and Mary only cancelled a handful of dated during her bone marrow transplant recovery; their concert tour resumed in late 2005 and several concerts are scheduled to take place in 2006.
