Pepe Aguilar was born in the United States but was raised in Zacatecas, Mexico. He was born to what may be one of Mexicos leading legendary artistic couple. His father, Antonio Aguilar was a singer and actor and was considered one of the worlds great ranchera voices, his mother, Flor Silvestre was a screen siren, who had also recorded 152 albums. Pepe Aguilar was influenced and supported by his parents to start singing. He literally grew up on a stage, Pepe was only three years old when his parents handed him a microphone. Pepe would go on to perform in New Yorks Madison Square Garden two years later. After saving money, Pepe Aguilar decided to buy a drum set to get involved in rock music, inspired by progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. He however returned back to his roots and began performing in the Tejano style once again , becoming a strong identity in the Latin scene, in addition to developing a successful acting career. Aguilars first traditionally minded recording was Pepe Aguilar Con Tambora, released in 1990.
His velvety voice and distinctive interpretation immediately struck a chord. But his fame truly exploded with 1998s Por Mujeres Como T collection of previously unreleased tracks that went on to sell nearly 2 million copies. The albums title track won Billboards Hot Latin Track of the year and made Aguilar a household name. Two years later, another studio album, Por Una Mujer Bonita, won a Grammy award for Best regional Mexican album. A purveyor of new music as well as an adamant advocate of history and tradition, Aguilar alternately records new material as well as classics. His albums have paid tribute to some of Latin musics greatest voices.1998 Por El Amor de Siempre, for example, is a tribute to the great balladeers of the 1970s, including Camilo Sesto and Jos osLo Grande de los Grandes is a tribute to mariachi stars, including Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Javier Sol Vicente Fernez and, of course, Antonio Aguilar.
