Paul Anka was born July 30, 1941 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He began his singing career as a member of the St. Eljjah Syriac Orthodox Church choir in Ottawa, and was a part of the trio called the Bobby Soxers while at Fisher Park High School.
At the age of 14, Paul Anka recorded his first single, "I Confess." In 1957 he left for New York City and auditioned for ABC singing a few lines from his song "Diana," which was dedicated to his former babysitter Diana Ayoub. "Diana" soon hit No.1 on the charts, and went on to be one of the best-selling 45s in history. Four songs in the Top 20 and Paul Anka was touring with the likes of Buddy Holly.
"It Doesn't Matter Anymore" sung by Buddy Holly became the theme for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show; "She's A Lady," sung by Tom Jones, and Frank Sinatra's signature song "My Way" were all penned by Paul Anka. Paul Anka began to dabble in acting in the '60s.
Paul Anka went 10 years without releasing a hit record. In 1974 he teamed up with Odia Coastes for the No. 1 hit "Having My Baby." A few singles later, and by the 1970s, Paul Anka focused mostly on adult contemporary music. After Times of Your Life in 1975, Paul Anka wouldn't release an album until 1989 with Somebody Like You and not again until Rock Swings in 2005.
Paul Anka was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1980, became an American citizen in 1990, and bought part of the Ottawa Senators of the NHL. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was married to Anne De Zogheb from 1963 until 2000. The couple had five daughters: Amelia, Anthea, Alicia, Amanda, and Alexandra.
