Born Patricia Louise Holt on May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Patti LaBelle first hit the charts in 1962 with the Bluebells. The R&B/soul singer fronted two moderately successful groups before rising to stardom as a solo artist in the late 1970s.
Her strong vocals and her signature high-octave vocal belting as well as her wild hairdos and wild outfits made her a prominent figure in the music industry. She started out with gospel music, sang doo wop music, then moved on to R& B. With LaBelle, her second group, she had a stint where she sang of racism, sexism and politics. Broaching controversial subjects was unusual for a female group in the 1970s. In 1974 LaBelle was the first African-American contemporary act to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House. Following her band's break up Patti LaBelle went solo in 1977 singing soul, funk, disco, salsa, and pop.
Patti LaBelle reached her next pinnacle of success in 1985 with her songs, "New Attitude" and "Stir It Up" (recently re-recorded by Patti and Joss Stone) from the soundtrack for Beverly Hills Cop (1984), which peaked at No. 14 on the pop charts. Her first solo No 1, "On My Own," was a duet with Michael McDonald. Through the ‘90s she recorded several successful albums but did not reach the same level of popularity.
The diva with the amazing vocal range was not immune to tragedy. Several of her family members died during a short period of time leaving her the mother of six kids - one born by Patti, three of one of her sisters' children and two adopted. She was married to Armstead Edwards in 1969; he became her manager. The two divorced in 2000.
In 1993, LaBelle became the first, and one of the few, recording artists to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame thanks to a petition by her legion of fans. She has written a biography and two low-fat cookbooks. Look for Patti LaBelle's long-awaited gospel album in 2006. A film debut is also planned including music from her reunited group LaBelle.
