Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumia make up Opie and Anthony, the hosts of the XM Satellite Radio and CBS Radio Program The Opie and Anthony Show. From 6 a.m. until 11 a.m., Opie and Anthony take over the airwaves. Occasionally, they go past their 11 a.m. time even though it is not in their contract to do so. The broadcast takes place on CBS Radio affiliates from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and then switches over to XM Radio from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or even 12 noon.
Both Opie and Anthony were born and raised in Long Island, New York. Opie worked on several upstate radio stations before working for WBAB. Anthony entered a radio contest on WBAB, Opie loved him and invited Anthony and his band to join him live for some shows. Eventually, Opie and Anthony teamed up to form Opie and Anthony as of March 25, 1995.
They began on WAAF in Boston, and were fired after an incident on April Fools Day 1998 where they had plenty of listeners, including his own daughter, convinced that then-Mayor Thomas Menino had died in a fiery car accident. Menino would eventually file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission.
In June 1998, Opie and Anthony were back on the radio, this time on the New York station WNEW. Eventually, the duo hit No. 1 in the area for afternoon drive shows. In 2001, they signed a three-year deal with Infinity Broadcasting for syndication of their shows to 22 markets around the country. They became No. 1 in several markets. In August 2002, Opie and Anthony were cancelled because of their part in the "Sex For Sam 3" stunt. Even though they were fired, according to the media, they were still under contract and were receiving payment even though they were no longer broadcasting.
Opie and Anthony were signed by XM Radio in August 2004 and began broadcasting in October. XM Radio is not subject to FCC guidelines. They consider themselves to be the Pioneers of XM Radio, seeing as they were one of the first to sign on. Their contract is renewed yearly, due to the troubles Opie and Anthony had with other radio stations.
