Of a Revolution began when Marc Roberge and Chris Culos were in high school. Richard On and Benj Gershman were later invited to join the band and the four moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend Ohio State after high school.
While they were there, they met Jerry DePizzo following the debut of their first album, 1997's The Wanderer, and added him to the line up. Songs such as "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," "City on Down," and "Night Shift" attracted attention through word of mouth and no other advertising or marketing. OAR released Souls Aflame in 1999, but it wasn't until 2001's Risen that the band started to see success. Risen hit No. 11 on the Billboard Internet sales charts, and the 2002 release of Any Time Now hit No. 156 on the Billboard Top 200.
Much of the popularity of OAR comes from their fans, which tape many of their concerts and then trade and download them on the Internet. OAR released Stories of a Stranger in 2005. In April 2006, OAR performed in front of 17,000 people at Madison Square Garden. OAR has also performed at Bonnaroo. They made videos for "Love and Memories" and "Lay Down," both of which were played on MTV and VH1. OAR also tours with the likes of Dave Matthews Band.
