Norah Jones was born as Geetali Norah Jones Shankar but legally simplified her name when she was 16. The daughter of Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Norah Jones spent most of her childhood living with her mother, Sue Jones, in Dallas. Norah Jones attended the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the University of North Texas. At North Texas she majored in jazz piano and won the Beat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist twice (in 1996 and again in 1997).
After just two years of college, Norah Jones left for New York City and never looked back. She began playing in New York City as a member of the band Wax Poetic. Norah Jones began working with guitarist Charlie Hunter in 2001. Her debut album, Come Away With Me, was released in 2002. Come Away With Me combined acoustic pop and soul and country. The album hit No. 1 on its way to selling 11 million copies in the United States, and the single "Don't Know Why" also hit No. 1 on the Top 40 Adult Recurrents.
In the 2000s, Norah Jones won eight Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, as well as Best New Artist. Also in 2003, Norah Jones made an appearance on Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The sophomore release from Norah Jones, Feels Like Home, has gone on to sell four million copies in the United States.
In 2005, Norah Jones added three more Grammy Awards to her collection for her duet with Ray Charles on "Here We Go Again." She also appeared on the song "Virginia Moon" off of the Foo Fighters release In Your Honor. Norah Jones tours in support of her music and showcases her eclectic talents.
