Nickelback formed in 1995. Singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger joined with his guitarist brother Mike and bassist Ryan Vikedal relocated to Vancouver and independently released the Curb in 1996. Nickelback then went on a cross-country tour. By 1998, the band was handling themselves, with Chad Kroeger in charge of radio, Mike Kroeger was distribution, and Ryan Vikedal was the booker.

Thanks to a law in Canadian radio that requires a certain percentage of music to be played by Canadian artists, Nickelback got a big break in time for The State, their second full length album. The State quickly had two Top 10 hits and went on to sell half a million copies in the U.S. The follow-up Silver Side Up featured "How You Remind Me," which was the most-played song of 2002. "How You Remind Me" hit No.1 in both the U.S. and Canada, marking the first time for a Canadian band to occupy both spots since the Guess Who's "American Woman" hit No. 1 in both countries in 1970.

Nickelback then went on to release The Long Road in 2003, which featured four singles. "Figured You Out" hit No. 1 in the U.S., but "Someday" hit No. 2, and "Feelin' way Too Damn Good" hit No. 3. Since "How You Remind Me", only one Nickelback single thus far has failed to hit the Top 10 in the U.S.

Nickelback's fifth album, All the Right Reasons, was released in 2005. Silver Side Up, The Long Road, and now All the Right Reasons have all hit No. 1 in Canada. While Nickelback has already toured with the likes of Creed, Fuel, and 3 Doors Down over the years, their latest tour has them headlining but also performing with Bon Jovi.
