Neil Sedaka Artist Information

Neil Sedaka has made many contributions to rock over the span of the last four decades. His timeless standards have forever changed the face of popular music as it is heard today. Neil Sedaka has numerous hit singles, and gold and platinum records to his name. When Neil Sedaka was only 13, he was introduced to 16-year-old aspiring poet and lyricist Howard Greenfield. The two then began writing songs together.

While he was in high school, Neil Sedaka began playing with the vocal group the Tokens. The Token had an audition with a music publisher in Manhattan, and that led to their signing by Melba Records. Shortly after the Tokens released a few singles, Sedaka left the group. A few years later, Aldon Music signed Neil Sedaka to a management contract as a performing artist. Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield stuck together even though they were yet to taste success. In 1958, "Stupid Cupid" sung by Connie Francis reached No. 14 on the Billboard charts. A few months later, the same trio recorded "Fallin'" and it peaked at No. 30.

In the fall of 1958, Sedaka took a leave of absence from Julliard, and was quickly signed by RCA Victor Records following an audition. After a string of singles flopped, Neil Sedaka decided that the best way to get a hit was to go out, purchase the best-selling albums on the international charts and figure out what was they all had in common. During this time, RCA released his self-titled debut album, which earned him a Grammy nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Performance by a "Top 40" Artist. Along with a string of hits and the Top Ten finish of his fifth RCA single, Neil Sedaka began touring in support of his albums. His touring took him to South America, the Far East, and Europe.

Through the ‘60s, Neil Sedaka continued to write songs and release albums. One of his biggest successes was "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," which peaked at No. 1 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock & Roll Recording. By 1965, Neil Sedaka had sold well over 25 million records worldwide. Unfortunately, his success began to decline at the point. In the ‘70s, Neil Sedaka decided to part ways with Howard Greenfield in favor of a new partner. Shortly after, Neil Sedaka had re-established himself in the U.K. and was looking toward making a comeback in the United States. Again Neil Sedaka had ups and downs. But by the mid-‘80s, it was clear that Neil Sedaka's chart-topping time was up. However, due to his past success of hits, Neil Sedaka was still able to tour internationally on the hotel and theater circuit.
