Moonspell was originally called Morbid God when they were formed in Portugal in 1989. Often described as doom-death or gothic-doom, Moonspell specializes in dark music. The Luciferian Saga has a heavy influence on the band, according to lead singer Fernando Riberio.
While they were known as Morbid God the band spent their time experimenting with their sound and recording various EPs and demos. In 1992, the band changed their name to Moonspell and they would release Anno Satanae a year later. Moonspell had their breakthrough in 1994 when they supported Cradle of Filth in concert.
Moonspell was signed by Century Media Records to release Wolfheart in 1995. Irreligious, released in 1996, featured "Opium," one of the band's most well-known songs to this day.
In 2004, Moonspell covered the jazz song "I'll see you in my dreams" for the Portuguese movie of the same name.
Moonspell continued to release albums with Sin/Pecado in 1998, The Butterfly Effect in 1999, Darkness and Hope in 2001, The Antidote in 2003, and finally, Memorial in 2006.
