Moe. formed at the University of Buffalo in 1990 when Chuck Garvey, Rob Derhak, and Ray Schwartz joined together to play on Halloween. Dave Kessler and Steve Hunter joined the band, who first called themselves Five Guys named Moe. In the fall of 1990, Steve Hunter quit the band, and the band's name was shortened to moe. Dave Kessler was absent from a performance one night, so Al Schnier sat in for him. Schnier became a frequent guest of the show, and officially joined the band in 1992 when Kessler left.

Moe. recorded Fatboy in June of 1992. Schwartz left the band to go to graduate school, and Jim Laughlin stepped in. Garvey left the band, and rejoined two months later. The band then recorded Headseed in 1994, and they all moved to Albany, New York.

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 1995, moe. recorded Loaf, their first official live release. More lineup changes, and more albums later, and moe. finally solidified their lineup. The current lineup consists of Chuck Garvey, Al Schnier, Rob Derhak, Vinnie Amico, and Jim Loughlin.

Moe. performed at the Tsunami Benefit concert at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on February 10, 2005. They also performed a concert on January 22, 2006 at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, New York; the $35,000 was donated to the Kelberman Center. They donated to the Center again in April 2006, this time upping their donation to $38,000.

Moe. also hosts the annual moe.down at Snow Ridge Ski Arena in Turin, New York. Every Labor Day weekend since 2000, moe.down runs for three days and attracts acts from all around the country. Moe. embarked on a musical cruise in 2004, and plans on having another one in 2007. Moe. tours around the United States, not just their home state of New York.
