Often called the blue-eyed soul singer Michael McDonald's husky baritone voice first drew mainstream attention with Steely Dan. He provided back-up vocals and keyboards on and off from 1970 to 1980. Recruited by The Doobie Brothers in April 1975 when their lead singer became ill during a national tour, Michael McDonald sang many of the Doobie Brothers' most recognizable songs including "Minute By Minute," "Takin' it to the Streets," and "What a Fool Believes."
When the Doobie Brothers broke up Michael McDonald went on to have the greatest success. Michael McDonald made a number of successful duets including "I Keep Forgetting," "Yah Mo B There," and "On My Own." Throughout his career Michael McDonald worked on a tremendous amount of collaborations. In addition to his stints with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers he has sung with, written songs with, or produced Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, James Ingram, Patty LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, David Cassidy, Christopher Cross, Tommy Johnston, Nicolette Larson, Amy Holland, Little Feat, Joni Mitchell, Boz Scaggs, Olivia Newton-John, and Wynonna.
Michael McDonald has won five Grammy Awards for his work as a soloist and collaborating with other artists. He has hit No. 1 on the music charts, garnered awards, been honored by peers, performed at major sports championships and is often referenced on popular film and television shows. The American soul singer was born in St. Louis in 1952. He is married to singer Amy Holland. In addition to his work as a performer Michael McDonald co-founded of the small independent recording label Ramp Records, with studio designer Chris Pelonis and actor Jeff Bridges. Michael McDonald has reunited to perform with the Doobie Brothers several times and he will tour with Steely Dan in 2006.
