Michael Crawford was born as Michael Patrick Dumbell-Smith on January 19, 1942 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He made his first singing appearance as a choirboy at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. His first stage debut would be a school production of Let's Make an Opera. The show's producer, Benjamin Britten, would hire Michael Crawford to take the role full time, which he would alternate with fellow soprano David Hemmings. Michael Crawford would also have to drop out of school. He would change his name shortly after his stint with that show.
After he was hired by the English Opera Group, his career took off. Michael Crawford also appeared in the children's films Blow Your Trumpet and Soapbox Derby. He has appeared on radio broadcasts and minor soap operas. By the late '60s his career expanded to leading roles in films with the likes of Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau.
Michael Crawford would win a Tony Award, an Olivier Award, and a N.Y. Drama Desk Award. In 1995, he created the starring role of EFX for himself. The $40 million production was the official opening of the MGM 1700-seat Grand Theater in Las Vegas.
Michael Crawford still makes appearances at various events in the United States and overseas.
