Metallica began in October 1981 when Lars Ulrich united with James Hetfield. Later on, Ron McGovney signed on, as did Dave Mustaine. Both of them left later on and were replaced by Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. In 1983, Metallica released their debut album, Kill ‘Em All, on Megaforce Records. Although the release did not have huge sales early on, Metallica built an underground following. One year later, Metallica released Ride the Lightning, and then followed that up with

Master of Puppets in 1986. Master of Puppets is regarded by many Metallica fans as the band's best work; the release hit No. 29 on the Billboard charts. Metallica continued to release albums at a rate of about one each year. During the release of 1988's … And Justice for All, Metallica recorded their first-ever music video. The "One" video helped the band increase their exposure to the public. The 1991 self-titled release contained the single "Enter Sandman," which is Metallica's best-known song. Another hit off of that album was "Nothing Else Matters," which was an acoustic ballad. The single was an awesome crossover hit, and brought new fans to Metallica. Metallica toured for almost three years in support of their self-titled release.

Load and ReLoad were released in 1996 and 1997, and began to signify a change in Metallica. Many of the songs were mainstream radio hits thanks to the bluesy rock songs on the release, and six singles received extensive airplay. A few more releases later, and on March 7, 1999 Metallica was inducted into the San Francisco Walk of Fame. March 7, 1999 was also proclaimed "Official Metallica Day" in San Francisco. During the next few years, Metallica would find themselves in a heated feud with Napster. Metallica had some of their unreleased music stolen from them and released onto Napster and the radio. Metallica asked the creator of Napster, Sean Fanning, to take their music off. He said no; a lawsuit ensued. Metallica took Napser to court and the rest is history.

In 2003, Metallica released their eighth album, St. Anger. St. Anger debuted at No. 1 on the charts, and earned a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Following two years on the Madly In Anger With The World Tour, Metallica took some time off to be with friends and family. A new album from Metallica is expected to be released sometime in 2006 or 2007.
