Bart Millard, Jim Bryson, and Mike Scheuchzer formed Mercy Me in Greenville, Texas, in the mid-'90s. After the band developed a solid fan base, the band spent some time in Nashville before returning to Texas. They would then add Nathan Cochran and Robby Shaffer to their line up.

Mercy Me signed with INO Records in 2001 to release their major-label debut, Almost There. The hit "I Can Only Imagine" put them in the spotlight, and the album went on to sell more than 2 million copies in three years.

Their follow up, Spoken For, was released in 2002 and saw two more Top 10 hits. Undone was released in 2004, and that too saw two more Top 10 hits. Coming Up to Breathe is Mercy Me's most recent release, in 2006. The release would hit No. 13 on the charts.
