Melissa Etheridge began playing guitar at the age of eight. Not too long after she picked up a guitar, Melissa Etheridge began writing her own songs. Throughout her teen years, Melissa Etheridge played in various local bands prior to attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She lasted only a year before leaving for Los Angeles.

By the time the early ‘80s rolled around, Melissa Etheridge was already lining up steady appearances at the Executive Suite in Long Beach. Her stint there eventually led to a bidding war between A&M, Capitol, EMI, and Warner Bros. for signing rights. Melissa Etheridge eventually decided to go with Island Records. She made her self-titled debut in 1988. The following year she released Brave and Crazy, which was her second gold-certified success. While her third release, Never Enough, did not amount to much of anything, it was her fourth release(from 1995) that gave Melissa Etheridge the commercial breakthrough she was hoping for. Yes I Am, so entitled to put a stop to the rumors surrounding her sexuality, sold an astounding six million copies in its first year of release. Hits like "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window" were both hits on MTV and the radio.

A few less successful album releases followed, along with the 2004 release of her autobiography The Truth Is: My Life in Love and Music. Also in 2004, Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to the early detection, she had plenty of time to recover, and even performed a tribute to Janis Joplin, a duet with Joss Stone at the 2005 Grammy Awards. Later in 2005, Melissa Etheridge released Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled. Melissa Etheridge tours today.
