Massive Attack evolved as an offshoot of the Bristol, England art community The Wild Bunch. Their lineup has shifted over the years, but they originally had three members, Robert Del Naja ("3D"), Grant Marshall ("Daddy G") and Andrew Vowles ("Mushroom"). In 1988 they released their first single "Any Love" and in 1991 their first album, Blue Lines, featured the hit singles "Unfinished Sympathy" and "Daydreaming." The album was well-received both critically and commercially, with some polls calling "Unfinished Sympathy" one of the best songs of all time. The album subsequently became one of the most influential British records of the 1990s, pioneering a new genre of music sometimes referred to as the "Bristol sound," but more often labeled trip hop.

The music of Massive Attack is electronic and combines elements of jazz, hip hop, rock, and classical. As the group progressed darker, subtler forms of electronic music have been dominant influences. Masive Attack often collaborates having worked with a diverse mix of artists from Sinéad O'Connor to reggae star Horace Andy to Madonna. The have created two movie soundtracks in addition to their studio albums and remix album. Their most successful album was 1988's Mezzanine hitting No. 1 on the UK and Australian charts.

Andrew Vowles left the band following Mezzanine because he didn't like the groups new musical direction. In 2006 the band released a greatest hits compilation, Collected. A new studio album Weather Underground is planned to follow. It will feature two of the original three members.
