Marty Stuart was born on September 30, 1958 and was obsessed with country music at an early age. He taught himself to play the guitar and mandolin and was performing with the bluegrass family act The Sullivan Family by the age of 12. He also spent some time as a member of Lester Flatt's band. He would join Johnny Cash's back up band in 1980.

His first solo album, Busy Bee Cafe, was released in 1982. Guest appearances on Marty Stuart's debut included Cash, Doc Watson, and Earl Scruggs. After leaving Cash's band, he released his self-titled debut in 1986. Two releases later came Marty Stuart's Tempted in 1991, which had three Top 10 hits. This One's Gonna Hurt You was Marty Stuart's 1992 release that ended up going gold.

He would release a greatest hits album in 1994, and became the President of the Country Music Foundation two years later. He would release another album, Country Music, in 2003. Marty Stuart launched Superlatone Records, his own custom label, in 2005.
