Best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the band Dire Straits Mark Knopfler has sold more than 100 million records including his solo work and his collaborations. Mark Knopfler has collaborated with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and the late Chet Atkins. Mark Knopfler started out in boy bands in the 1960s while he studied English and worked as a reporter.
Dire Staits released their self-titled first album in 1978, eventually scoring a hit with the single "Sultans of Swing." After releasing several albums Dire Straits enjoyed its most successful period with the 1985 album "Brothers in Arms." An international hit, it included the single "Money for Nothing" which became the first video ever played on MTV in Britain. Mark Knopfler was always the driving force behind the band as Dire Straits lineup changed through the years.
After Dire Straits disbanded Mark Knopfler released his first solo album in 1996. Following that up with a series of solo albums, Mark Knopfler's most recent release is an album of duets with country music singer Emmylou Harris, entitled All the Roadrunning in 2006.
Mark Knopfler also produced albums for artists such as Tina Turner, Randy Newman, and Bob Dylan. In addition, he has scored the music to several films, including Local Hero, The Princess Bride, Cal, Last Exit to Brooklyn and Wag the Dog.
