It's safe to say Mariah Carey has singing in her blood due to the fact that, born in Long Island, NY, she was the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach. She started singing at the age of four and was writing her own material by middle school. She first got attention from the music industry when she backed up Brenda Starr. Mariah was later picked up by Columbia Records.

Her debut album, released in 1990, produced an out of the ordinary four number one hits and two Grammy Awards. Her first single "Vision of Love" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mariah Carey has become the best-selling female performer of all time. She has become the only artist to have a number one hit in each year of the 1990s and she has an overall total of an unprecedented 15 number one hits. With her hit, 'Heartbreaker', Mariah pushed ahead of the Beatles to earn the number one spot for most cumulative weeks spent atop of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

Mariah Carey has won five Grammy Awards including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Famous for her high notes Mariah Carey repeatedly hit No. 1 with songs such as "Dreamlover" and "Hero." In 1994 Mariah Cary received Billboard and American Music Awards for Female Artist of The Year. Mariah Carey received Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award and the World Music Award for Best-Selling Female Artist of the Millennium. The album Music Box sold more than 23 million records worldwide making it the most successful album to date. "One Sweet Day" set a record by staying on top of music charts for 16 weeks. The 1994 Mariah Carey song "All I Want For Christmas" still ranks as the second most played Christmas song chart. Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970.

Though criticized for her sugary sweet love songs Mariah Carey does write many of her own songs and has dealt with subjects such as spirituality and racism. As a child of a multiracial family Mariah Carey says she felt the pain of racism growing up. After a short career slow down Mariah Carey was back in the spotlight by 2005. In 2006, after a three-year absence, Mariah Carey embarked on a new tour "The adventures of Mimi: the voice, the hits, the tour".
