Manhattan Transfer was established in New York City in 1972. The band manages to combine jazz, big band, and popular music in their sound. Manhattan Transfer was founded by Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, Laurel Masse, and Tim Hauser: Laurel Masse would later leave the band and Cheryl Bentyne would join.

In the beginning, Manhattan Transfer performed at various clubs in New York City before they released their self-titled debut in 1975. Their next two releases, Coming Out and Pastiche were successes in Europe and saw a string of Top 10 hits. Extensions, released in 1979, saw Manhattan Transfer's first hit in the U.S. with "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone." The song would go on to become one of Manhattan Transfer's signature songs.

In 1981, Manhattan Transfer became the first group to win a Grammy Award for jazz and for pop in the same year; "Boy From New York City" won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and "Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)" won Best Jazz Performance, Duo or Group. Manhattan Transfer would win another Grammy Award in 1982 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group for their rendition of "Route 66."

A few releases later, and Manhattan Transfer released Vocalese in 1985. It would receive 12 Grammy Award nominations, which made it second only to Michael Jackson's Thriller as the most nominated album (at the time). It would win Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group and Best Arrangement for Voices.

Manhattan Transfer would release The Christmas Album in 1991. Their next few releases has Manhattan Transfer experiment with various genres of music from swing to the music of Louie Armstrong. Manhattan Transfer's most recent release is 2004's Vibrations, which was their 25th release.
