Madame Butterfly is a three-act opera by Giacomo Puccini. Based on the short story by John Luther Lang, Madame Butterfly was also made into a play by David Belasco. The first version of Madame Butterfly debuted at La Scala in Milan on February 17, 1904.

At first, Madame Butterfly was met with poor reviews and was only two acts long. Four months later, it would be re-released in Brescia and featured a split-up second act and a few other minor changes. This time, Puccini's work was met with greater success, and Madame Butterfly would move to the Metropolitan Opera by 1907.

Madame Butterfly is now only two acts when performed in Italy, but the American version is three acts. Madame Butterfly is the most performed opera in North America.
