Lucinda Williams was born January 26, 1953. The American folk, rock, and country music singer/songwriter has won three Grammy Awards and was named by Time in 2002 as "America's Best Songwriter." She began playing guitar at the age of 12.
By her early 20s, Lucinda Williams was playing publicly in Austin and Houston, Texas, but moved to Jackson, Mississippi to record her debut Ramblin' for Smithsonian/Folkways Records in 1978. Neither that release (which was a cover of blues and country songs) nor her follow up, 1980's Happy Woman Blues (of her own material) received much attention. Lucinda Williams would move to Los Angeles in the '80s.
It wasn't until the single "Changed the Locks" off of her self-titled 1988 release through Rough Trade Records that Lucinda Williams received radio play throughout the country. Lucinda Williams would write the single "Passionate Kisses," which was sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter and would win Lucinda Williams a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best Country Song.
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, released in 1998, was Lucinda Williams' breakthrough to mainstream. "Still I Long for Your Kiss" won her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and was featured in The Horse Whisperer. Car Wheels of Essence, released in 2001, won Lucinda Williams a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance for "Get Right With God."
Lucinda Williams has released six studio albums, a live album (2005's Live @ The Fillmore), and a DVD Lucinda Williams Live from Austin, TX, also in 2005.
