Luciano Pavarotti is one of the most famous singers in the world not only for opera but for other genres as well. Born October 12, 1935, Luciano Pavarotti made his opera debut on April 29, 1961 in La Boheme as the part of Rodolfo. His American debut would come in February 1965 at the Greater Miami Opera stage of Miami-Dade County Auditorium with Joan Sutherland. Luciano Pavarotti was pushed into the role when the scheduled tenor fell ill the night of the performance. He then went on a short tour of Australia, adding more roles to his repertoire everywhere he went.
His performance in Rome on November 20, 1969 while singing I Lombardi was recorded and distributed as his first recording. Luciano Pavarotti made a breakthrough in the United States on February 17, 1972 as he hit nine effortless high Cs during Donizetti's La Fille Du Regiment at the New York Metropolitan Opera. That night he also received a record 17 curtain calls. He then began to occasionally perform on television.
In the early 1980s, Luciano Pavarotti set up The Pavarotti International Voice Competition for young singers. For the celebration of his 25th anniversary of his singing career, Luciano Pavarotti invited the winners of the competition to join him in Italy for performances of La Boheme in Modena and Genoa, and then on to China. Many more such tours followed.
Luciano Pavarotti had his version of Giacomo Puccini's aria "Nessun Dorma" as the theme song for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. It is still his trademark song today. The '90s saw Luciano Pavarotti perform at various outdoor concerts, including a televised one from London's Hyde Park, which drew a record crowd of 150,000 people. In June 1993, more than 500,000 people gathered at the Great Lawn of New York City's Central Park to hear Luciano Pavarotti.
Luciano Pavarotti would occasionally perform as part of the Three Tenors with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. December 12, 1998, Luciano Pavarotti became the first (and only at this point) opera singer to sing on Saturday Night Live.
Luciano Pavarotti split with his manager of 36 years in 2002. Herbert Breslin would release a book two years later The King & I, which was largely critical of the singer's ability to read music and learn parts, and his personal conduct, but still acknowledge their successes. In 2005, Luciano Pavarotti would attempt to dispel the rumors, saying that he had difficulty with following orchestral parts but that he can read music.
Luciano Pavarotti currently holds two Guinness World Records: one for the most curtain calls with 165; and the other for best-selling classical album. Luciano Pavarotti started his farewell tour in 2004, set for 40 cities. In the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, he sang as the final act of the opening ceremony. Luciano Pavarotti had to postpone some of his 2006 dates due to back problems but is expected to eventually finish his dates.
