Loretta Lynn was born April 14, 1935, and was the leading country female vocalist of the ‘60s and '70s. Some even feel as though she was the most famous woman of the '70s; Loretta Lynn was chosen from among first ladies and world leaders in "most admired women" polls.

Loretta Lynn's big break came when she won a local talent competition and was noticed by Buck Owens. Owens invited her to perform on his television show and her performance landed her a deal with Zero Records. Shortly after Loretta Lynn recorded "I'm a honky Tonk Girl" in 1960 her family moved to Nashville.

Throughout her career, Loretta Lynn wrote over 160 songs and won eight BMI Awards. She would go on to release 70 albums; 17 of them hit No. 1, and 27 singles hit the top of the charts. Thanks to her membership in the Grand Ole Opry and the weekly nationally syndicated The Wilburn Brothers television program Loretta Lynn soon became the No. 1 female recording artist.

Loretta Lynn was nominated for five Grammy Awards, and in 2005 she won Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. She is also one of only five female artists (Reba McEntire, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, and Shania Twain) to win Entertainer of the Year from the Country Music Association.

Loretta Lynn's younger sister, Brenda, known as Crystal Gayle, is also a country singer. Both Loretta and Brenda are cousins of Patty Loveless.
