Jane's Addiction front man Perry Farrell organized the first Lollapalooza. Lollapalooza, which means "something outstanding or unusual," began in 1991 and played each summer until 1997 . Lollapalooza began again in 2003, took a year off in 2004, was back in 2005, and is scheduled for 2006. Lollapalooza has often been compared to Woodstock of the ‘60s. The original goal of Lollapalooza was to bring the music to the fans, unlike other festivals that required travel. Due to that set up, more people attended Lollapalooza than any other previous music festival.
The 1991 Lollapalooza featured a variety of acts ranging from Ice-T and Nine Inch Nails. The first Lollapalooza had only one stage and a second stage was added for up-and-coming bands. A third stage was added in 1996. Thanks to the explosion of grunge in the early ‘90s, Lollapalooza became an instant success. Just a few short years later, in 1994, Lollapalooza was starting to run out of steam. Various violent incidences at several shows, and the addition of more mainstream music saw Lollapalooza begin to fall apart. By 1997, Lollapalooza had one lost hurrah after losing focus. No band wanted to headline Lollapalooza in 1998, and that marked the end of the festival.
In 2003, when Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction reunited, Lollapalooza was back. This time, the Lollapalooza circuit would hit 30 cities but was greeted with less than expected response. Due to a lack of response, Lollapalooza was cancelled again in 2004. In 2005, however, Lollapalooza was brought back and was scheduled as a two-day festival in Chicago following the sale of Lollapalooza to Capital Sports & Entertainment. Lollapalooza is scheduled to run in Chicago again in 2006.
